Our View: Join Us Again In ‘Helping Neighbors’

by The Cape Cod Chronicle

It’s Independence Day, our annual celebration of fun, family, fireworks — and freedom. As we do each year at this time, we’re inviting you to join us in helping promote a different kind of liberty: freedom from hunger.

From now through Labor Day, we’ll set aside some space in each edition to write about the Family Pantry of Cape Cod as part of our Summertime Helping Neighbors campaign. You’ll have the chance to learn about this remarkable charity and its mission to feed and clothe everyone in need in our region.

If you think that sounds like a big job, you’re right. The number of client visits to the Family Pantry has jumped about 19 percent over last year’s numbers, with more and more families needing help putting nutritious food on the table. So far this year, the Pantry has had 517 brand new clients, and each week, volunteers hand out truckloads of high-quality food and countless items of clothing.

Thanks to very generous donors, the first $45,000 in donations to Helping Neighbors will be matched, dollar-for-dollar. Our goal is to raise at least $90,000 by the end of the summer, but we can only reach that goal with your help. While we know that many year-rounders will heed this call, Summertime Helping Neighbors was devised as a means of encouraging generosity from summer visitors, from day-trippers to seasonal homeowners. If that’s you, thanks for considering our request.

And don’t forget to enjoy a fabulous Fourth and all the star-spangled family fun that comes with it!
