Monomoy High Hosts Cape Cod Special Olympics

HARWICH – Approximately 500 athletes and unified partners were in attendance Friday as Monomoy Regional High School hosted Cape Cod’s Special Olympics Games.

Athletes ranged in age from 5 to 21, and some of Monomoy’s graduates returned for the day to help out as volunteers. The theme of the day was “Monomoy, Land of Kindness,” and Monomoy’s SHORE and SAIL students hand-made CandyLand characters and many of the activities that helped bring the event to life.

“One of my main focuses was to create activities that were accessible to all,” said Monomoy special education teacher Shana Grogan, who organized the event. “I had a large focus on the inclusivity of wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment, such as strollers, gait trainers and walkers.

“I truly feel that our vision for the Monomoy, Land of Kindness theme was successfully achieved by the hard work and positivity that was displayed throughout the day by our Best Buddies and community volunteers. This event is always my favorite day of the year.”

Students from Monomoy, Nauset, Dennis-Yarmouth, Barnstable, Sandwich, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Bourne and Cape Cod Collaborative were among the athletes who competed.
