Edward Gorey’s 100th Celebrated At Ocean Edge
BREWSTER – Last Saturday, the Edward Gorey House celebrated Edward Gorey’s 100th birthday with an evening of festivities at the Mansion at Ocean Edge.
Attendees, dressed in their “semi-finest Gorey attire,” sipped Gorey-themed cocktails, ate a catered dinner and finished the night with a birthday toast. Almost 200 guests from around the country celebrated the centenary event with a silent auction and a peek at upcoming programming at the Gorey House, located in Yarmouthport.
Gorey was a well-known illustrator, writer, poet and theater designer. He illustrated more than 500 books and published 116 of his own works. Throughout his years in New York and on Cape Cod, Gorey was a strong animal welfare activist. After his death in 2000, he left his Yarmoutport home to the Edward Gorey Charitable Trust which he established for the welfare of all living creatures, including not only cats, dogs, whales and birds, but also bats, insects and even invertebrates. The home was converted into a museum whose profits and programs help benefit animal rights and literary causes.
