Fire Damages Old Sea Pines Inn
BREWSTER – Firefighters from several area towns joined Brewster crews in knocking down a blaze in the rear of the Old Sea Pines Inn building Monday evening.
The fire department was dispatched to 2553 Main St. just before 6:30 p.m. to investigate heavy smoke in the area, and arrived to find smoke and fire coming from the second floor and roof of the two-story house attached to the main three-story Old Sea Pines Inn building. Crews declared a working fire, calling in additional firefighters from Harwich, Orleans, Dennis, Eastham and Chatham.
Fire Chief Robert Moran said the initial crews “rapidly stretched multiple attack lines under heavy smoke and fire conditions into the building to extinguish the fire while conducting primary searches for possible occupants.” They found no one inside and kept the blaze from spreading to the rest of the historic structure.
“Arriving units had heavy fire and smoke on the second floor that made it difficult to reach the main body. Once walls and ceilings were opened up, the main body of fire was quickly extinguished,” he said.
There were no injuries, and Moran said the cause of the fire is still being determined.
“It is being investigated as accidental at this time,” he said. “Contractors were working in the fire building earlier in the afternoon.” A rough estimate puts damage at around $100,000, he added.
Late last year, the inn was purchased by the owners of the 429-acre Ocean Edge property for $2,475,000.
