Jillian Ortega, the newest stylist at the Hair Company in Chatham, must feel like that. Ortega is very happy styling, cutting and coloring hair. And I should clarify her status at the Hair Company. She may be a new stylist but she’s been working at the salon for nearly seven years.

Ortega, an Empire Beauty School graduate, worked as the salon coordinator taking appointments, marketing and organizing the front area, and will continue to do that “as I step out onto the floor!” she says with a smile. “I watched and observed Libby, Muriel and Lynda the entire time. We are a very tight-knit family here. They have guided me and taught me so much. It has been an honor to learn from each of them.” She told me that she is still sharing her time between the front desk and behind the chair to ensure a smooth transition for the salon and the clients.

“Working in this industry has been a goal for a long time, and taking this next step has been so exciting! One of my earliest childhood memories is watching my mom doing her hair.” She said she understands that if you stick with the program, finish it, continue to take classes to expand and stay current, you will have a “fun, creative career!”

“Jillian is so professional, always smiling and does a great job with my hair; color and cut,” said one happy client. “And she always does exactly what I ask her to do.”

Ortega said she made the transition seamlessly because “there is no level of competition here. The client comes first. We all work together, for the betterment of the clients.”

She specializes in color and highlighting. “I really enjoy it,” she said. “And I love the new line, Color WOW. It’s a great product.”

Ortega said she also loves the connections she makes with her clients. “We hear all about their lives. And we’re changing their lives a little; we’re making them feel beautiful!”

Muriel Underhill, stylist/owner of the Hair Company, says she has enjoyed watching Ortega blossom into the stylist she is today. “Hair is our passion, and our passion shows on every client who walks out our door. Jillian shares our philosophy. She is a valued member of our team.”
