HARWICH – Last year’s return of “Meet Your Local Farmers” was a great success, and this Saturday the Harwich Conservation Trust and Orleans Farmers Market will once again sponsor the event, but at a new location.
The event was started by the Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) and the Cape and Islands Farm Bureau in 2009, and was held each year at the community center on Oak Street. This year it will be moved to the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School.
The event celebrates the start of spring and provides the opportunity to support local agricultural initiatives. More than 50 farms, farm-supporting organizations and conservation groups will be on hand to answer questions and share stories. The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Meet Your Local Farmers” returned last year after a five-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, and the overwhelming turnout made it clear that the event plays an important role for Cape residents. An entrance count for last year’s event showed 1,717 attendees.
“We had been hearing cries from folks about bringing the event back,” said HCT Executive Director Michael Lach. “It was much larger than we’ve ever had before, so we hope to bring it back next year as well.”
Farmers will be selling their unique products, including fresh produce, seafood, locally grazed meats, and an assortment of flowers. And don’t forget the animals. There will also be a number of farm-related educational booths and homemade crafts for sale.
“It’s a great opportunity to bring home some Cape-grown goodness,” Lach said.
Wayne Naus and the Art Ensemble of Cape Cod will provide music.
The event is free and open to the public. Sponsors of the event are Agway of Cape Cod, Cape Cod 5 and The Cape Cod Chronicle.
