Eugene Bicknell Doggett

January 21, 2026

Eugene Bicknell Doggett (Gene), age 89, passed away on January 12, 2026 at Beverly Hospital in Beverly, Massachusetts, following complications from a serious bacterial infection.
Known as “Giggy” to his grandchildren, Gene was a devoted husband, father, and friend who valued family, hard work, thoughtful planning, and a deep connection to the natural world. Gene was an enthusiast for harvesting oysters and many other types of seafood. He was happiest when out on the water – whether he was going off on a nautical adventure, watching shorebirds, or fishing.
Gene always set a high bar, and he believed that if you were going to do something, you should “do it right,” a philosophy that was reflected in countless ways throughout his life and inspired those around him to do their best.
Born May 29, 1936 in Englewood, New Jersey, Gene grew up spending summers in Chatham, Massachusetts, where his lifelong love of the sea took root. He graduated from Phillips Academy (1953), Yale University (1957), and Harvard Business School (1960).
Licensed as a U.S. Coast Guard captain at age eighteen, he later built a successful career in finance that included positions at the First National Bank of Boston, New Hampshire Finance Corp., G.H. Walker & Co., and Arthur D. Little, Inc., Tucker Anthony & R.L. Day Inc., and Carlisle Capital Corp. Most notably, he served as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Iron Mountain (NYSE.IRM), helping guide the company from its early days to a public, global enterprise, and later served on its board of directors.
Gene married the love of his life, Nina Lord Doggett, in 1968. Together they shared nearly six decades of life, travel, and adventure, eventually retiring in Chatham before settling in Manchester-by-the-Sea.
With Nina as his true companion by his side, Gene greatly appreciated birdwatching and traveling to exotic locales. Gene’s love of boating, combined with his enjoyment of exploration, resulted in him captaining cruises on numerous trips along the east coast from Maine to the Bahamas for thirteen years.
A passionate conservationist, Gene served as a longtime leader and volunteer with organizations including the Massachusetts Audubon Society, Chatham Conservation Foundation, and Manomet Inc.
Gene is survived by his wife Nina; two sons Christopher and Thomas; five grandchildren Samuel, Edward, Jacob, Bailey, and Lucy; daughters-in-law Karen and Jennifer; two brothers William K. Doggett and John V. Doggett; and his beloved dog, Jasper. Eugene Bicknell Doggett will be remembered for his integrity, curiosity, love of nature, and a life lived fully and well.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Gene to any of the following organizations: the Massachusetts Audubon Society, the Essex County Greenbelt Association, or the Vermont Center for Ecostudies.
Funeral services for Gene will be shared with friends and family separately.  Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA.  Information, directions, condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com
