January 14, 2026

EAST HARWICH - Mary L. (Greeley) Kane passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on New Year’s Day, two days after her 91st birthday.
She was born on December 30, 1934 in Watertown, Massachusetts, daughter of the late Joseph and Helena (Cavanaugh) Greeley. Raised in Newton, she was a graduate of Our Lady’s High School in Newton. She married Walter J. Kane at Our Lady Help of Christians Church on June 14, 1958. They settled in Burlington, MA. where they began raising their children. In 1982 they moved permanently to Cape Cod, settling in Harwich. Mary and Walter celebrated 62 years of marriage before his passing in 2020.
Mary had fond memories of growing up in Newton with her large family and summering at their cottage on Plum Island. After high school Mary worked for a time at both Boston College and the John Hancock Insurance Company. She loved to read, sing, and spent years enjoying dance and exercise classes with friends. She volunteered for over twenty years at Holy Trinity Thrift Shop in Harwich, alongside her dear sister and friends. She cherished her friendships from her membership in the Red Hat Society on the Cape, as well as more recently from her widow’s group. She especially loved spending time with her family. Her home was the heart of the family, with Sunday morning visits becoming a weekly ritual and Sunday afternoons the place to be for football.
Mary was a devoted and loving mother to nine children. She leaves behind her children Jacqueline M. Ganshirt and her husband William of Brewster, MA; Patricia A. Smith and her husband Timothy of Lowell, MA; Maureen E. Tomkins and her husband Robert of Burlington, MA; Susan A Kovac and her husband Mark of Orleans, MA; Walter J. Kane, Jr. and his partner Tara Owen of Chatham, MA; William F. Kane and his wife Catherine of East Harwich, MA; Eileen M. Kane; Daniel P. Kane and his wife Katie of Harwich, MA and John D. Murphy and his partner Becky Holt of Hyannis, MA and her daughter Morgan. “Grandma” will be sadly missed by her twelve grandchildren - William, Amy, Tyler, Matthew, Bobby, Stuart, Johnny, Jenny, Julianne, Leah, Cece, and Elise. Thirteen beautiful great-grandchildren survive her as well. Mary also leaves behind her brothers Richard Greeley of Burlington, MA; Michael Greely and his wife Joanne of Waltham, MA; sisters Carol Scaltreto and Virginia Greeley both of Waltham, MA, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by siblings Joseph, William, John (Greeley) and Elizabeth (Betty) Carberry.
The family would especially like to thank the caring and compassionate staff from Broad Reach Hospice, for their kind support for Mary and her family over the past month. In lieu of flowers, please thank a healthcare provider or consider making a donation to a charity of your choice. Graveside burial service will be private.
