PLEASANT LAKE – Cape Cod Tech junior Senny Walton produced a triumph in getting buckets during the Crusaders’ 52-47 loss to Upper Cape Tech last week.
Walton came off the bench in the first quarter and subsequently recorded 24 points — more than half of the girls basketball team’s total in the Dec. 29 matchup. After subbing in, she started with a 3-pointer dished by junior Zanae’ Barrett.
Then she exploded. Walton scored 13 off five shots in the second quarter. She added 8 more points in the second half and hit four 3-pointers on the day.
She caught and shot a pair of baskets from deep in the corner on inbound passes from the baseline and made another on a crafty sidestep off the dribble. Walton mixed the jump shots with attempts from closer range. She said if she sees an open lane, she’s always going to take it. But if she sees a teammate open in the post, she’ll pass to them, too.
“I like to just go off my team, and they support me every way through what I need,” Walton said. “And if I need help, I go through them, and they're just really supportive.”
Walton is motivated by her late mother.
“I pray every day for my mom, and I feel like she's up there watching me,” Walton said.
She also leans on her teammate junior Cassidy Nicholson, who also lost a parent.
“When I'm mad at myself, she's like, ’Get in the game, you got this, do it your way,’ so she's also really a support system for me, and I really appreciate it,” Walton said.
