Cecelia B. Downey

November 26, 2025

Cecelia B. “Ceil” Downey (Rogers), of Acton and East Dennis, MA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 15, 2025, with both of her daughters holding her hand. Born on February 10, 1942, in Boston, MA, to Astrid and Irving Rogers of Weymouth, Ceil entered the world with a spark that never dimmed.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and by the love of her life, her husband of 35 years, Richard “Dick” Downey. Their marriage was a true partnership—rooted in faith, respect, laughter, and unwavering devotion. After Dick’s passing in 2003, Ceil carried herself with extraordinary strength, resilience, and grace. She continued to love him devotedly for the rest of her life.
Ceil leaves behind her two daughters, Erin Reynolds and her husband Chris of Midlothian, VA, and Kara Boulé and her husband Andrew of Harwich, MA, who adored her beyond measure; her treasured grandchildren Calvin, Cooper, Alexandra, and Tanner, who brought unmatched joy into her world; her sister Barbara Rogers; her brother Irving (Buddy) Rogers; and many extended family members, cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Ceil was a truly remarkable woman. She was strong-willed, impeccably polished, sharp, funny, and full of heart. Earning her Bachelors at Eastern Nazarene College, she continued to earn her Masters in Counseling Psychology from Fitchburg State.  A trailblazer for women in the workplace, she built a long and respected career in Human Resources across multiple industries and often spoke with special fondness of her years at Digital Equipment Corporation. She met every challenge—and every opportunity—with integrity, confidence, and an undeniable sense of class.
But above all, Ceil’s greatest calling and deepest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, an extraordinary mother, and a grandmother who lit up at the mere mention of her four grandchildren. She was her daughters’ greatest champion, their steady voice of reason, their confidante, and truly their best friend. Her love was a constant—steady, unconditional, and fiercely protective.
Ceil cherished traditions and simple joys: ski trips to North Conway filled with family laughter, cheering from the sidelines at her daughters’ and grandchildren’s sporting events and concerts, playing Mah Jong with friends, sharing stories and recipes around the table weaving Nantucket baskets, and spending time with her “summer family” and lifelong friends from the Dennis Yacht Club.
Her absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but her influence, wisdom, and love will live on in every life she touched.
A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, November 25, at Our Lady of the Cape in Brewster, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Ceil’s honor to the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL), 3981 Main Street (Route 6A), Brewster, MA 02631.
