Oyster Sunday Continues To Be A Crowd Favorite

BREWSTER – Oyster Sunday, the off-season recreational harvest that continues through the fall, has been a longtime cherished tradition in the Brewster community.
Shellfish permit holders are alerted of low tide times and head out to harvest up to five quarts of oysters from the beds located in the Mant’s Landing flats.
This past Sunday, dozens of residents got in line to sift through the crates and collect the Cape Cod delicacy, just in time for Thanksgiving.
Each Sunday’s schedule is determined by the tide, so it is important to check before heading out. It is also recommended to wear suitable attire and footwear in order to wade into the water.
Sunday was also the department of natural resources’ annual food drive to benefit the Brewster Caring Cupboard Food Pantry, which supports families in need.
Earlier this month, Town Manager Peter Lombardi said while the food drive is a regular occurrence every year, it couldn’t have come at a better time. SNAP benefits have resumed following the end of the government shutdown earlier this month, but the need for supplemental food assistance is still greater than ever.
At around 8 a.m., 30 minutes before the event ended, three pick-up truck beds had been filled with non-perishable items.
