October 22, 2025

The world has lost a beautiful soul.  It is with much sadness we announce the passing of Thomas Bradford Shaffer of Chatham, MA  who left us on October 11, 2025 at the age of 59, surrounded by immediate family and an amazing family of friends in the comfort of his home in Chatham.
Tom was born in Washington D.C. on September 15, 1966.  He spent his early years in Sparta, NJ and then moved to Cape Cod in 1979 where he attended Chatham High School, graduating in 1985.  He went on to graduate from the University of Kentucky with a degree in psychology in 1990.
Tom became an expert landscaper and meticulous house painter, with many, many happy customers.  He enjoyed spending his free time playing trivia in various venues on the Lower Cape with Team Albacore for 17 years.  He became well respected and legendary for his vast and diverse knowledge and his photographic memory.  He loved music, Boston sports teams, his alma mater UK,  and crossword puzzles.  His enormous circle of friends and their families deemed him “Uncle” and he spent almost every holiday in that role, including playing Santa for the kids.  Family meals were his utmost pleasure, enjoying their home cooking to the max.  Tom was known for his loyalty, warmth, sense of humor and never-ending giving spirit.  He cherished an extraordinary family of deeply devoted friends from near and far that filled his life with overflowing love and support.  The wonderful memories they hold of their beloved friend are immeasurable.  The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to each and every one in his extended family.
Predeceased by his parents, the Rev. Dr. Harold F. and B. Joan Shaffer, he is survived by his three siblings, S. Gregory Shaffer (VA), Mary-Ellen Gmoch (VA) and Douglas M. Shaffer (ME).  He also leaves behind nephews, Garrett T. Gmoch, Kevin F. Gmoch, and Robert G. Shaffer; nieces, Courtney A. Shaffer, Ashley R. Shaffer, and Ella M. Shaffer along with three great-nephews and one great-niece.  Tom will be forever loved and missed by all.
A burial at Peoples Cemetery in Chatham and a celebration of his life at Pleasant Bay will take place on future dates, to be determined.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests trees and shrubs be planted in his name at locations of choice.
