The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association released its first set of “power rankings” — which determine seedings for state playoff tournaments — for high school fall sports last Friday, and several local teams are in the mix. Other teams have plenty of time to bounce back into contention or stack wins to earn qualification.
In every sport but football, the top 32 teams in each division qualify for the postseason state tournament. Teams that are ranked 33 or below but have a record of .500 or better qualify for a preliminary play-in game. In football, the top 16 teams with at least three wins and seven games played qualify for the postseason tournament. Records listed here are as of Tuesday (and thus may be different than what the MIAA used for rankings last Friday).
The highest-ranked group among all Lower Cape-area teams was Monomoy field hockey (6-3-1), who slotted in as the No. 2 seed in Division 4, behind only Dennis-Yarmouth (6-1). Also in field hockey, Nauset (2-6) ranked 20th in Division 3.

In boys soccer, Cape Tech (2-3-1) lined up at Division 5’s No. 19 seed, Monomoy (2-4-1) was listed as 36th in Division 4 and Nauset (3-4-2) was 46th in Division 3.
In girls soccer, Cape Tech (2-3-1) currently is 31st in Division 5, Monomoy (2-4-2) is 38th in Division 4 and Nauset (4-4-1) was 37th in Division 3.
It will be an uphill climb for local football teams, as Cape Cod Tech (1-2) was ranked 28th in Division 8, Monomoy (0-3) was ranked 32nd in Division 6 and Nauset (0-4) was ranked 36th in Division 5.
The Cape Tech Crusaders volleyball team (6-4) ranked 18th in Division 5, the Monomoy Sharks (2-6) ranked 46th in Division 4 and the Nauset Warriors (7-4) ranked 44th in Division 3.
While boys golf isn’t ordered under MIAA’s power rankings, Cape Tech (6-1) and Nauset (10-0) have qualified for the Division 3 South State Sectional. Monomoy (5-3) only needs to win a few more matches to also qualify.
Cross country also isn’t ranked by the MIAA, but divisional championship meets are Saturday, Nov. 8. The Cape Tech boys team is 2-1. The Monomoy boys team is 3-0 while the girls are 2-1. The Nauset boys cross country team is 4-0, and the girls team is 1-2.
