A Day Of Celebration For Harwich Port Library
HARWICH – The Harwich Port Library celebrated its centennial birthday on Aug. 27 with cake, music and patrons dropping by to pay tribute to the village institution.
The library greeted visitors and friends with a sense of community, said Bob Green, a member of the board of directors. A late afternoon downpour was followed by a rainbow and then a steady stream of visitors, both residents and non-residents of all ages. Many were first-time visitors who discovered the library and experienced its broad book offerings, accessibility, and friendliness, with some checking out books that evening, said Green.
The library received a proclamation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Cape and Islands Senator Julian Cyr, D-Provincetown, in which legislators offered their sincerest congratulations to the library in recognition of its 100 years of “stories, knowledge and community contributions.”
The 100th anniversary events kicked off with The Jazzmen author Larry Tye and the Art Ensemble of Cape Cod Jazz Trio at Pilgrim Congregational Church in early June, and proceeded with author talks at the library by Jim Coogan and Gerree Hogan, and a Literary Luncheon with authors Marjan Kamali and Martha Hall Kelly at the Old Yarmouth Inn in July.
Harwich Port Library has operated at 49 Bank St. in Harwich Port since its grand opening on July 4, 1925. As a free public library, it welcomes all and provides free access and borrowing privileges to residents and non-residents alike. Its year-round hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Fridays.
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
