“Godspell,” opening at the Academy Playhouse in Orleans Aug. 7, is a celebration of community, love and laughter. A modern-day story of friendship and faith, “Godspell” is an uplifting musical that retells the parables of Jesus through songs, humor and a touch of whimsy.
“This show is really about a group of individual people coming together to form a community. It's about love, forgiveness and acceptance above all else,” said director and Academy trustee Randy Doyle.
Stephen Schwartz’ 1971 musical is known for its playful staging and beloved songs like “Day by Day,” “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” and “By My Side.” The Academy Playhouse production leans into the spirit of togetherness with immersive staging that breaks down the traditional barrier between viewers and cast.
“We work in the audience space — and at times even invite audience members onto the stage,” Doyle said. “It's inclusive for everybody.”
The approach aligns with Artistic Director Judy Hamer’s vision of cultivating a warm, inclusive environment where visitors and artists feel like they belong.
“It’s a really intimate theater, and I want it to be a true community place where people feel like they’re family,” she said.
Following maintenance and updates to the historic theater after it closed in 2018, “Godspell” is one of the Playhouse’s most interactive and energetic shows yet. Director Doyle encouraged the cast from day one to push boundaries and bring bold, original ideas to the production. Cast members share the stage — and the rehearsal process — with openness and joy, Doyle said.
“Because of the nature of what we’re doing and just the fun we’re having, this has been a joy from day one,” Doyle said. “It’s probably been the most joyful experience in theater ever — and I’ve done a lot of theater.”
“Godspell” runs Aug. 7 through Aug. 24 at the Academy Playhouse at 120 Main St. Performances take place Thursdays through Sundays, with evening shows at 7 p.m. and select matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets and more information are available at www.academyplayhouse.org.
