Athlete Of The Week: Michael Anderson

SOUTH YARMOUTH – The game between the Brewster Whitecaps and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox last Friday was something of a mid-July marquee matchup: whichever team won would be in first place in the East Division.
Well, Whitecaps left fielder Michael Anderson has played higher-stakes Cape League games before. He appeared in more than 30 games last year for the league-winning Harwich Mariners. And it was his bat that jumped Brewster to the top of the standings in the 10-5 seven-inning win, in which Anderson went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs, a team-leading seven total bases.
“We picked up Michael Anderson because he single-handedly, I think, beat us four times last year when he was at Harwich,” Brewster manager Jamie Shevchik said. “And I told him when he got here, the only reason we’re taking him is so he can’t get on another team so he doesn’t beat us.”
Shevchik was joking, but the idea was that he knew Anderson was capable of the performance he produced against Yarmouth-Dennis. A Penn State transfer, Anderson pulled a two-RBI double down the third baseline in the top of the second to put Brewster up 3-0. In the fourth, he blooped a single into short left field, eventually scoring on a Cal Fisher single. To cap off the day, Anderson blasted a solo home run to center field, Brewster’s 10th run of the evening.
“Just trying to put good swings on the ball and just helping to get the team to win,” he said.
Anderson doesn’t only bring experience to the Whitecaps as a second-year Cape League player, he adds a championship pedigree. Harwich went 16-24 in the regular season in 2024 then went on to reach and win the championship series against the Bourne Braves. Anderson hit five home runs with 20 RBIs for the Mariners.
“I think that matters, to have a guy that won a championship come onto your team and knows what it takes, so he’s a good clubhouse guy, a team guy, and he’s a winner, and I like that,” Shevchik said.
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
