Breakers, Upper Cape Draw To Maintain Third-Place Tie

NORTH EASTHAM – It began as a battle between two teams tied in the standings, and after 90 minutes of even play, it ended that way, too. 

Upper Cape United and Breakers FC drew 1-1 last Sunday night at the Breakers’ home field at Nauset, unable to crack a stalemate between the two teams that were both in third place in the Cape Cod Soccer League. 

After an Upper Cape goal midway through the first half, Breakers FC’s Chatham Headrick struck a bullet from the left side of the pitch in the 44th minute to tie the score. 

“We needed that equalizer,” Breakers General Manager Tony Conte said. “It helped us at least get a point.” 

The second half was scoreless, so Upper Cape (3-1-6) and Breakers (5-4-1) remained knotted at 15 points in the standings in a tie for third place as of Tuesday. 

“[Upper Cape] are very controlled,” Conte said. “They have a lot of possession, so we were able to counter a few times, so that was important for us to be able to do because they do control a lot of possession.”

Breakers had a pair of very good chances in the match’s last minutes but couldn’t find the back of the net. The team was looking to stretch the field and get over the top of Upper Cape’s defense with speed.

After moving back to Nauset from Brewster and consequently losing seven players, Breakers “had to struggle to find the pieces to make up for what we lost,” Conte said.

“We did some recruiting this winter, and it's paying off, because it's really hard to build consistency when you turn over players, and we were able to overcome that challenge,” he said.

With just a handful of games left until the Cape Cod Soccer League’s postseason Davis Cup tournament, Breakers FC would likely have to win out to move up in the table. But as it stands, the team is in position to host a quarterfinal match.
