HARWICH – The Farmers Market will get underway today, July 3, on the front lawn at 204 Sisson, the Cultural Arts Municipal Building.
This is the second year a summer market will be held on the lawn at 204 Sisson, and this year it has been expanded to encompass the Harwich Farmers Market. In its inaugural year the Thursday afternoons event was known simply as The Market.
"The Market at the 204 kicked off its first summer in 2024, and after great success we welcome it back with a broader focus on the Farmers Market,” said Director of Cultural Affair Kara Mewhinney. “We worked all fall and winter long to secure more produce, more baked goods, more variety in our vendors.”
Those efforts will be a drawing card throughout the summer, with new vendors like Sweet Daisies, Sweet and Sourdough, Halls Cape Cod Cranberries, Cape and Island Produce, Capabilities Farm, Little G's Garden, Baxter Street Creations, Tom's Curiosity Shop, Bee Mindful Children's Books, and many more beefing up the offerings, Mewhinney said.
“We are proud of the work we have done and look forward to seeing our visitors. Each week we will be joined by Press Ahead Coffee and Cape Cones, both will be offering a variety of treats,” she said.
The Harwich Farmers Market will take place every Thursday, starting July 3, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. with more than 25 vendors, including at least five farmstands. All markets are rain or shine, said Mewhinney; if it rains, the market will move inside the cultural center.
This summer vendors will be accepting SNAP, which provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget.
The Harwich Historical Society, former sponsors of the farmers market, will have a booth on opening day.
“Anyone Interested in talking with us about your love of Harwich history or wanting to take a look at what events we have to offer throughout the year, or simply want to make a donation, come visit us at our booth,” said Harwich Historical Society President Anita Doucette.
The Artisan Shacks at Saquatucket Harbor will open on July 2, operating 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays through the end of August. Each week new vendors will be renting the shacks, while some of the vendors may stay for longer periods of time, Mewhinney said.
"Our shacks provide various artists and creatives an opportunity to showcase their work in a different way,” she said. “The experience allows patrons and visitors an opportunity to shop in a unique spot without heavy food traffic or the feeling of being overwhelmed by a crowd.”
The shacks are located in the parking lot behind the harbormaster’s office and the Dockside Cafe overlooking Saquatucket Harbor. The artisan shacks have been operating since 2018 and have become a staple of the cultural affairs summer programs, according to Mewhinney.
