Carol Ann (Cronan) Smith

June 13, 2025

Carol Ann (Cronan) Smith, of YarmouthPort, passed away peacefully the day after her 90th birthday at her home on April 29, 2025.  She was predeceased by her loving husband Bertram Smith and her daughter Michele Leete.  Carol is survived by her daughter, Kimberly A. Summers (Scott Barrett) and her son Patrick.  Her stepchildren Stephen (Tuija), Leslie (Phil), Michael (Anne Marie), and Lisa Smith also survive Carol along with 8 grandchildren, and a great granddaughter.
After working at Yale New Haven Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital as an x-ray technician for children with cancer, she and Bert moved to Chatham in 1971 and opened Bert & Carol’s Lawnmower and Bicycle Shop... a 40 year fixture in the then small town.  Their decision to leave their professions in Boston and run “the shop” was based on a desire to live in a natural setting and appreciate the beauty and bounty of the Cape.  While raising the children and running the business they enjoyed gardening, boating, fishing, camping, square dancing, and civic activities.  Since retirement they wintered in Palm Beach and then Vero Beach making many lasting friendships.  Carol was involved in many activities including MahJongg, book clubs, knitting and stitching.  Carol had a passion for helping those in need by knitting blankets for the homeless, hats and booties for the NICU babies, and serving as a volunteer teacher to students in the literacy program.  Carol will be remembered as a no-nonsense,  hard-worker, a great friend/mother/wife, with a smiling demeanor, her love of cats, knowledge of selling antiques, and her desire for all to strive for human decency and kindness. The family thanks all that visited and cared for Carol during her four month illness.  All friends welcome to a celebration of life to be held in August at Stage Harbor.  Contact Kim for details.
