Lower Cape Teams Compete In Postseason Play

As the school year nears its end, spring sports enter the postseason and the state championship tournaments that come with it.
Several Monomoy and Nauset teams qualified for tournaments by placing in the top 32 schools in their division according to the MIAA’s power ranking system, and the competition is well underway.
The Monomoy boys and girls tennis teams, both seeded third in their Division 4 brackets, each earned a first-round win. The boys (15-3) beat No. 30 seed Bartlett (10-6) last Thursday 5-0, and the girls (14-4) beat No. 30 seed Tyngsborough (14-2) last Wednesday 5-0. In the second round, the boys faced No. 14 Bourne (8-10) Tuesday, and the girls played No. 19 seed Palmer (12-5) Wednesday. Both games were held after press time at Brooks Park in Harwich.
Both Nauset tennis teams’ seasons came to an end in the first round of the Division 3 state tournament. The No. 25 seed boys (5-11) fell 5-0 to No. 8 seed Holliston (9-5) last Wednesday, and the No. 17 seed girls (9-7) lost 5-0 to No. 16 Swampscott (14-4) last Thursday.
On Monday Monomoy, No. 18 seed softball (18-2), lost 10-3 to No. 15 seed Pittsfield (7-13), No. 21 seed baseball (14-6) lost 4-2 to No. 12 seed Monument Mountain (13-7) and No. 25 seed boys lacrosse (11-7) lost 17-5 to No. 8 seed Littleton (15-1).
No. 17 seed Monomoy girls lacrosse (12-6) lost 16-7 to No. 16 seed North Reading last Friday.
In golf, Monomoy placed seventh and Nauset placed ninth May 27 at the MIAA South Sectional Tournament. Monomoy senior Emily Layton and Nauset sophomore Sophia Silvestri qualified individually for the state championship in Wayland, held Wednesday after press time.
In track, the Cape Cod Tech boys placed third and the girls placed seventh at the Mayflower Athletic Conference Championship.
At the MIAA Division 4 Championship, the Nauset girls placed 19th and the boys placed 23rd. Among several other achievements across the team, Nauset junior Violet Roche won the girls high jump at 5 feet 4 inches, and Nauset junior Reed Dill placed sixth while setting a school record of 59 seconds in the 400 hurdles.
At the MIAA Division 6 Championship, the Monomoy boys placed 18th and the girls placed 41st. Notable marks among the team include a championship for the boys 4x100m relay team of senior Logan Crevier, junior Sean Needham, junior Jonathan Sagesse and sophomore Alique Brown, with a time of 43.76 seconds. The girls 4x100m relay team of juniors Mackenzie Bowers, Alexa Ford, Zay-Dah Thomas and sophomore Varvara Conley placed fifth with a time of 52.59 seconds.
For Nauset lacrosse, the No. 2 seed boys (14-4) won 20-6 against No. 34 seed Montachusett (10-6) on Monday while the No. 16 seed girls (11-6) won 17-15 against No. 17 seed Archbishop Williams (15-5) (see separate stories). The boys will next host No. 15 seed Hanover (7-11) and the girls visit No. 1 seed Medfield (17-3) on Thursday.
