Molly MacGregor knows a thing or two about self storage. In fact, she and her sister, Cate MacGregor, co-owners of Sun Self Storage on Meetinghouse Road in South Chatham, recently opened a brand new 69-unit facility next to their current storage building. In total, the Chatham Sun Self Storage location has 200 units, with 69 of those spaces in the new building. They offer a range of unit sizes to accommodate any personal or commercial need. “Our access hours are from 6 a.m to 9 p.m., which accommodates pretty much anyone,” she notes.
The MacGregor sisters are no strangers to the world of self storage. Their father, Bruce, a Brewster native, had been in the industry for decades and started the family business. The new building at the South Chatham location is the first facility that the MacGregor sisters opened on their own.
“Self storage is so localized,” MacGregor says. “There is a big demand for it in this area of the Cape.”
In addition to the location in Chatham, the sisters also own and operate self-storage facilities located across the Cape in Wellfleet, Hyannis, Mashpee and Falmouth.
The MacGregor sisters recently returned from a whirlwind trip to a storage conference at Foxwoods
“We had four of us at the conference this week,” MacGregor says. “There was so much good networking and learning about new technology and security for storage. It sounds like the most boring thing in the world, but it was fun!”
The company’s website features a storage 3D calculator tool which can help clients decide what type of space will work best. However, MacGregor says that many renters like to see the units in person so they can get a feel for what it will hold.
“We get a lot of rentals online now, but people like to show up and see the space,” she says. “We have a golf cart that drives them over to the new building if they don’t want to walk. It’s a new two-story building with a lift for all of your stuff.”
MacGregor notes that the storage units are used for all sorts of purposes. She says that in addition to the average customer who needs storage from recent moves, renovations or relocations, often businesses will use their facility for overstocks.
“We have stores in town who will be here everyday — it’s good, flexible space for them. We even have a local author who uses storage here to store their extra books,” MacGregor says.
Sun Self Storage is 100 percent solar powered, too, which MacGregor is very proud of. And in terms of technology, Sun Self Storage keeps it simple and doesn’t overcomplicate their process with tablets and apps.
“We have key pads and cameras and we consciously choose to have staff on site that can show units to customers,” she says.
Having staff on site daily makes all the difference, MacGregor says. It allows Sun Self Storage to offer a higher level of customer service than a more fully automated facility. “Someone answers the phone. That makes a huge difference,” she says. “It helps make the process a lot smoother, a lot simpler. If you have a question, someone is there to meet you.”
