Beloved husband & father
Naples, FL – Mr. Francis J. Sullivan, 82, formerly of Waterbury, CT and Chatham, MA, passed away on Saturday, April 12. He was the husband of Margaret (Butler) Sullivan.
Franny was born in Waterbury on February 12, 1943, son of the late Francis and Marguerite (Walsh) Sullivan. Raised in Waterbury, Franny attended local schools and was a graduate of Crosby High School, class of 1960
In addition to his wife of 61 years, Marge, Franny is survived by his children, Elizabeth Sullivan-Well of Waterbury; Robert Sullivan of Naples, FL and Diane Sullivan of Naples, FL; his brother, Raymond Sullivan and his wife Margaret of Watertown; his sisters-in-law, Arlene Sullivan and Alice Sullivan, both of Southbury; his grandchildren, Stephen Well, Scott Well and Katie Well all of Waterbury; his great granddaughter, Aubrie Well Famiglietti of Waterbury and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert Sullivan, Thomas Sullivan and Joseph Sullivan, Sr and his son-in-law, Albert R. Well.
Community was important to Fran, and he was actively engaged wherever he lived. In Waterbury, he became a successful small business owner, which led to his involvement in local politics. He served the City of Waterbury over four decades. His roles included Alderman, President of the Board of Aldermen, and Chief of Staff to the Mayor during the Bergin Administration. He played a key role in Mayor Jarjura’s write-in campaign and contributed to the election of Mayor Neil O’Leary. He worked for the State of CT within The Board of Education for the Blind. In retirement, his leadership skills found an outlet in his service on the Board of his beloved Oyster Pond in Chatham. He finally had time to golf, dig clams, walk his dog Wilson and patronize his favorite establishments with friends old and new. Warmer weather eventually lured them to reside in Naples, Florida. Throughout his well-lived life, Marge and Fran were fortunate to develop lasting and deep friendships wherever they called home. Most cherished among these is their over sixty-year friendship with Bruce and Donna Griffith, formerly of Waterbury, Chatham and now residing in Naples, who are always by their side.
A Mass of Christian burial was held on May 19 at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. 74 West Main St. Waterbury. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury.
