James L. Boardman

May 01, 2025

James L. Boardman died peacefully at home in Chatham on April 16th, 2025.
James, lovingly known as Jim, was born on June 26th, 1956 in White Plains, NY. He spent his childhood boating and fishing at the family owned Tide Mill Yacht Basin in Rye, NY. In 1972, his family moved to Cape Cod, where he attended Nauset Regional High School, graduating in 1975. Jim then served in the US Army as a cook from 1976-1982. He won best Mess several times and was known as an outstanding soldier.
After the Army, he made his way home to Cape Cod, where he started a family and co-owned Daniels Car Wash with his brothers, Daniel Boardman and Brooks Boardman. He continued his service as a Merchant Mariner and worked for American Overseas Shipping Company and later for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.  Even after his retirement, his commitment to staying busy meant you might find him painting houses one day and driving a cab the next.
Known for his good natured spirit and convivial presence, Jim was always ready with a laugh. A lifetime lover of the sea, he was an avid boater, a skilled fisherman, and a dedicated adventurer.  He delighted in antique MG cars and long drives. He enjoyed music and classic black and white films. He adored animals and nature. He never missed a dinner party, especially one that was bound to turn into a hat party. Most of all, he loved his family. His warmth and wit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Jim is survived by his wife, Queena Boardman; his children, Libby H. Boardman, Graham B. Boardman, and James E. Boardman; his grandson, Ryder J. Muto; and his nieces, Kimberly T. Trethaway and Meredith P. Boardman.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday June 14th, at the Brewster VFW from 2pm-6pm. All are welcome.
Memorial donations can be made to Pleasant Bay Community Boating, 2287 Route 28, Harwich, MA 02645 or Brewster VFW Post # 9917, 989 Freeman’s Way, Brewster, MA 02631.
