William David Nichols
CHATHAM - William David Nichols also known as “Willie 5” passed away peacefully on March 12, 2025 from dementia at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, MA. He was born Nov.11, 1944 in Presque Isle, Maine to the late Ralph L. and Eleanor (Morrison) Nichols.
Willie graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1963. He attended the University of Maine at Orono. He extended his education at Boston Architectural Center in Boston, MA. He made his home in North Chatham, MA. on Cape Cod.
Willie was a bartender at the Chatham Squire for many years, and also Willie was a professional house painter and had his own business, Nichols Painting. He was well known for his theatrics behind the bar and for his articulate painting skills. Willie 5 was known for his caring heart, his laughter and storytelling. His kindness and gentle spirit touched the lives of so many and his memory will be forever cherished.
Willie was an avid Boston sports fan, loved the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, and Boston Bruins. Willie played softball as a pitcher for the Squire team, and made lifelong friendships. One of his favorite pastimes was walking the beach in Chatham, enjoying the peacefulness and the beauty.
William is survived by his sisters; Nancy England of Presque Isle, ME., Sallie (Robert) Theriault of Caribou, ME., and Betsy (Thomas) Fitzherbert of Presque Isle, ME., many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers; Peter and Joel Nichols, a brother-in-law Jim England, and his beloved Maria.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday May 17, 2025 at 1PM at the Aroostook Shrine Club 390 Houlton Rd. Presque Isle, ME. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bowers Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Presque Isle. Online condolences may be shared at bowersfuneral.com A celebration of life will be held in Chatham at a date to be determined.
