BREWSTER – At the end of last season, Izabelle and Robert Crisanti purchased Kate’s Fried Seafood and Ice Cream with the intention of establishing themselves in the community while honoring the business’ legacy.
For 39 years, Kathy and John Ohman ran the popular eatery at 284 Paines Creek Rd. In September, the couple said they are ready for a new adventure, but wanted to make sure their fans knew the establishment wouldn’t be changing too much.
“We are so in awe of what Kate and John did for the community and the restaurant they built,” Izabelle said. “The number of customers who came into the restaurant last summer and talked about how they’ve been coming to the Cape for years and they hope that we keep it alive and maintain everything that they’ve done.”
On Monday, the Crisantis went before the select board to share their plans for the restaurant, which will be renamed The Cape House, and submit a seasonal liquor license application. They plan to sell wine, beer and malt beverages between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. daily.
The Crisantis will also be keeping the menu the same, with a few additions to add some variation. They both have worked as professional chefs at seasonal hot spots around the area and want to add their own flare to the add-ons.
“And the onion rings?” said Dave Whitney, select board chair.
“Yes, we are keeping the onion rings,” Izabelle said with a laugh.
Across the street is Betty’s Curve, town-owned property that has informally been used for overflow parking, which the town agreed to during COVID-19. Town Manager Peter Lombardi said he would work with the conservation commission, which has care and custody of the property, to draft a formal agreement. Liquor will not be allowed in the surrounding areas, including Betty’s Curve.
The Crisantis received unanimous approval for the liquor license, which will now be sent to the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission for final approval.
If approved, the seasonal license will be valid from April 1 through Dec. 31 each year.
“We’re really respectful of all the history, but we also want to build on it and bring more to the Cape,” Izabelle said.
