The family of Robert Masters Goss of Chatham, MA is saddened to announce his passing on February 13th, 2025, at the age of 99 years old. He passed peacefully in his home surrounded by family after a long battle with Parkinson’s.
Bob, or “Pa” as he was affectionately called by his four grandchildren, was born on April 18th, 1925, in Cleveland, OH, grew up in Pennsylvania, and went on to study at Penn State University. During this time at college, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the 55th Armored Engineering Battalion of the 10th Armored Division during World War II. Bob deployed to Europe in September of 1944 where he saw much action along the front, including seven days under siege in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. This earned him and his fellow soldiers the Presidential Unit Citation, recognizing their extraordinary heroism in action. After returning from the war, he resumed his education at Penn State and pursued a career in Civil Engineering after graduating.
While living in Rochester, NY, Bob met Nancy Groves, his future wife of 52 years, and together they raised their two children there. In 1999 he retired and moved to live full time in Chatham, MA in a house he had built for his mother in 1958.
He will be remembered by Nancy, son Richard Goss (Tori Pluta), daughter Elizabeth Goss-Kaplan (Justin Kaplan), and four grandchildren Aiden, Kate, Caroline, and Evie for his quiet quick wit, his love of food, his story telling abilities, his arsenal of expressions (lovingly called “Pa-isms”), and so much more.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday February 22nd from 2pm to 6pm at the family home in Chatham. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Chatham Conservation Foundation, chathamconservationfoundation.org.
