HARWICH – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Route 28 sidewalk project extending from Saquatucket Harbor to Bank Street in Harwich Port gets underway this week with tree trimming and cutting and tree protection installations.
The proposal calls for a sidewalk from the parking lot at Saquatucket Harbor along the south side of Route 28 to Bank Street, with associated curb ramps and crosswalks. A pedestrian bridge will be added over the existing culvert that allows Carding Machine Brook to flow under Route 28 just west of Brax Landing.
The town received notice of the beginning of the construction last week, according to Town Administrator Joseph Powers. Preparation work was scheduled to start on Feb. 10 and the actual six-foot-wide sidewalk construction will get underway on March 17, he said.
There could be periodic road closures and lane shifts while the work is underway, he said.
According to the MassDOT website, the project will cost $2,572,850 and is projected to be finished by April 15, 2027
