BREWSTER – Late last year, the council on aging was in a bit of a dilemma with its transportation services.
The organization, dedicated to assisting and supporting older adults in the community, owned an old minivan used to transport passengers to appointments and errands. While the miles were meaningful, the van had seen better days.
“Our 2007 minivan had been with us for as long as I could remember — at least, that’s what it felt like,” said COA Director Elton Cutler. “But, like all things, it had its limits, and it was reported to be beyond repair with its worn-out frame.”
With a limited budget, the COA was not able to purchase a replacement immediately. Thankfully, Cutler knew exactly who to turn to.
The Friends of Brewster Seniors is a local nonprofit organization with the mission of enhancing the quality of life for seniors in the community through advocacy, support and enrichment activities.
Established in 1979, just five short years after the COA was created, the group acts as a fundraising partner for the senior center’s programs and needs. It also provides support for the individual needs of economically challenged seniors in the area.
“When we learned of [the need], we sprung into action,” said Friends president Mary Dearborn.
With the help of community fundraisers and member donations, the group was able to purchase a new 2024 Toyota Sienna Limited seven-passenger minivan which was gifted to the COA. In total, $59,683 was raised for the vehicle.
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Friends held an event to officially present the gift. Town Manager Peter Lombardi, select board members, the Friends of Brewster Seniors board of directors and COA board members were in attendance to commemorate the generous donation and take part in the special presentation.
“We are very appreciative of their hard work,” said Cutler. “A donation of a new minivan allows us to continue to provide meaningful transportation to seniors for grocery shopping and medical appointments.”
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
