Shorthanded Nauset Not Enough For D-Y In 28th Chowder Bowl

SOUTH YARMOUTH – The Chowder Bowl trophy is staying at Dennis-Yarmouth for a fifth straight year.
Hindered by injuries throughout its lineup, the Nauset football team struggled to keep pace with D-Y’s high-powered offense before suffering a 35-6 defeat in the 28th installment of the Chowder Bowl rivalry Thanksgiving Day.
“The guys battled,” Nauset coach Jesse Peno said. “We were down seven or eight starters that have contributed all year, and we were losing more and more every week. It’s hard. It would’ve been a great matchup, but our kids were so resilient and tough.”
Dennis-Yarmouth (8-3) senior quarterback Jayden Barber threw three touchdown passes, rushed for another and reeled in his first touchdown reception of his career to lead the Dolphins.
Nauset (7-4) senior Isaiah Robinson was named the Warriors’ Offensive Player of the Game after moving from wide receiver to wildcat quarterback for much of the game. Robinson finished with 139 all-purpose yards, including 99 rushing yards on 20 carries.
The program’s first 1,000-yard receiver rushed for a 7-yard touchdown to cut D-Y’s lead to 28-6 in the final quarter.
“I put Isaiah back there and he carried the ball 20-plus times and gave it everything he had,” Peno said. “We couldn’t really pass much with the weather, so I’m proud of him for the way he didn’t give up.”
Senior Owen White was named Nauset’s Defensive Player of the Game, while D-Y senior Ryan Arnold received the honor for the Dolphins. Walter Mayo was awarded D-Y’s Offensive Player of the Game award after catching two touchdown passes from Barber.
It was a bittersweet finish for the Warriors, who just barely missed qualifying for the postseason amid the program’s first winning season since the 2022 squad finished 6-5.
“We graduate 12 really key pieces, but we’re excited to be bringing a lot back,” Peno said. “It’s nice to finish with a winning season. I think this is the most wins we’ve had since 2012 or something like that, so it’s a great way for us to go into the offseason.”
Peno said the future is especially bright because this year’s freshman class, including quarterback Oliver Accettullo, who saw some playing time behind center on Thanksgiving, will return with a year of high school football under their belt.
“We have a really good freshman class this year, some of which played today,” Peno said. “The future is going to be really bright. They had a good JV season, and we have a lot of guys coming back.”
