BREWSTER – Santa is set to visit residents at Drummer Boy Park on Friday, Dec. 6, kicking off a month-long celebration of holiday cheer.
Led by the Brewster Chamber of Commerce, Brewster for the Holidays provides mostly free programming to local families, and this year, raises money for the Nauset Youth Alliance. “[These events] are fun for the young and young-at-heart,” said Kyle Hinkle, executive director of the chamber.
This season, Holiday Headquarters is located at 2672 Main St., the offices of Leighton Team Keller Williams Realty. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stop by and pick up a Holiday Passport to receive special offers at participating businesses around town. Headquarters will be open daily between Dec. 6 and Dec. 22.
Festival weekend commences with Rockin’ Round the Christmas Tree in Drummer Boy Park. Starting at 4 p.m. Friday, viewers will participate in the annual tree and windmill lighting, followed by a carol sing-a-long with the Eddy Elementary School Choir. Santa will also make his debut, arriving in one of Brewster’s own fire trucks.
Later in the evening, the Brewster Band will perform their 18th Annual Holiday Concert at the Brewster Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to support NYA.
Both time slots for the Dec. 7 Breakfast with Santa have already been filled, raising money for the Brewster Holiday Hope Fundraising Drive, which donates gifts to families in need. Hosted by the recreation department, the breakfast will be hosted by Ocean Edge Resort.
But that isn’t the last opportunity to meet Santa. On Sunday, Dec. 8, the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History will be hosting a free family dance party and photos with the jolly old elf. Local musician Jim Nosler will be behind the mic with holiday favorites, and Santa will be available to hear little ones’ Christmas wishes. Attendees are asked to bring their own camera. Non-perishable food items will be collected for the local food pantry.
Once festival weekend comes to a close, events will still be happening throughout the month.
The Brewster Store is hosting holiday caroling on Friday, Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. with free hot chocolate and treats. Crocker Nurseries will be holding a centerpiece-making class on Saturday, Dec. 14 to decorate any holiday table.
Hinkle said it was important to the Chamber, as it is every year, to make sure the programming was kid-centric.
Starting Nov. 29, the front lawn at Ocean Edge will be filled with a festive forest and igloos will be available to reserve for dining and drinks.
This year’s commemorative ornament is an original work by Artist Ben McLaughlin, and features a delicate hand-drawn hermit crab in a periwinkle shell. McLaughlin uses a mix of watercolor and pen ink to create his work, notably using a technique called stippling. He is incredibly inspired by sea life and often adds elements of nature into his work, even using Cape Cod Bay water to mix pigments. McLaughlin goes by the penname Ben N’ Ink.
