HARWICH – It wasn’t his personal best, but it was enough to be the best in the conference.
Pushed by classmate Isaac Barros, Cape Cod Tech freshman Casey Fitzgerald finished the Mayflower Athletic Conference championship meet in 18 minutes, 29 seconds to capture the individual title and help lead the Crusaders to the small division team championship.
“It was awesome,” said Fitzgerald, a South Yarmouth resident. “Isaac gave me a really good fight. We’re always competitive and every race is back and forth.”
Barros finished second behind Fitzgerald at the league meet to cement the freshmen tandem’s place among the league’s top runners.
Fitzgerald was quick to praise Cape Tech coach Sam McCormack for his challenging workouts that helped the runners improve their times during the Crusaders’ 5-0 season.
“This has been a really great season,” Fitzgerald said. “We put in a lot of hard work, so to go undefeated as such a young team was awesome.”
