I have yet to see or hear our media pundits address the problem with our political situation: It’s the two-party system, folks! Isn’t it (past) time to eliminate and to nominate two or three persons of diverse standards? Let’s have fun!

It has come to our attention that no resident of South Chatham currently sits on the review committee for the recently approved affordable housing project on Meetinghouse Road, Route 137, in Chatham. This development will greatly impact our South Chatham community and deserves to have ongoing input from our residents. To be making decisions that will affect South Chatham citizens without their participation seems inappropriate. Hopefully, this was an oversight that will be corrected by our town manager.

As an Army veteran, animal advocate and taxpayer, I’m calling on Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congressman Bill Keating to stand up for animal welfare and stop dog and cat abuse in labs funded by the Department of Defense.

Despite the availability of more effective and humane alternatives, the Pentagon continues to fund troubling experiments on dogs and cats. The watchdog group White Coat Waste Project (whitecoatwaste.org) has exposed that the DOD is paying for cruel tests including dosing dogs with experimental drugs and subjecting cats to invasive and deadly experiments. These practices are not only inhumane but also wasteful and irrelevant to advancing human health.

Senator Warren and Representative Keating, members of the Armed Services Committee that oversees the DOD, have been leaders on animal protection in the past and now have the chance to end this outdated practice.

With strong bipartisan support, language prohibiting the DOD from spending on cruel biomedical research involving dogs and cats has been included in the must-pass National Defense Authorization Act for 2025. This bipartisan amendment, co-sponsored by House Armed Services Committee members, was unanimously approved, signaling a clear message: taxpayers, regardless of political background, do not want their money used for these unnecessary and inhumane animal experiments.

The Armed Services Committee is currently finalizing its 2025 Defense bill. Senator Warren and Representative Keating can positively impact animals, servicemembers and the American public by ensuring this measure protects dogs and cats from cruel experiments and makes it to the president’s desk.
