Community Outpouring For Family Of Chatham Teacher

Several fundraising efforts are underway for the family of Chatham Elementary School teacher Shannon Waldron Hubbard, who died Oct. 14 along with her 1-year-old daughter Margaret following a fire in New York.

 A Nov. 3 fundraiser is being planned and two online efforts are underway to raise money for John Hubbard, a Dennis police officer, and the couple’s 3-year-old son Jack, both of whom survived the fire in the Town of Clinton, N.Y.

 Boston radio personality Greg Hill launched an online fundraiser for the Brewster family last week through his Greg Hill Foundation. As of Tuesday, the fund drive had raised more than $165,000. The site can be reached at www.thegreghillfoundation.org/donations/hubbard/.

 A second online effort through Meal Train, a website that helps coordinate meals for people experiencing significant life events, had raised more than $3,600 and scheduled dozens of meals for the Hubbard and Waldron families. Volunteers can sign up to provide meals through February at www.mealtrain.com/trains/yrqgvk. 

 The Nov. 3 fundraiser will be held at the Sea View Restaurant located at 76 Chase Ave. in Dennis Port. Organizer Stephen Boyson said the event will feature samplings from Dennis restaurants, several speakers, and the town’s police officers, firefighters and town employees will help out with food service and running raffles. Restaurant owner Paul McCormack is donating the use of the restaurant as well as contributing bar proceeds to the Hubbard family.

Tickets are $50 and will be available through Eventbrite; Boyson said he expects the fundraiser to sell out quickly. Anyone wishing to donate items for the event’s raffle can contact Boyson at 978-925-4004.

 Boyson is also organizing a fundraiser at Entertainment Cinemas in Dennis, details of which are still being formulated. Donations for a “Hubbard Strong” account to benefit the family can be sent in care of treasurer James Plath, Box 330, Dennis, 02638. Checks should be made out to “Hubbard Strong.” 

 Mrs. Hubbard, 35, perished in the fire at an Airbnb late on the night of Oct. 13 while trying to save her daughter and son, who were trapped on the second floor. Mrs. Hubbard and Margaret did not survive; John and Jack Hubbard were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

 Mrs. Hubbard was raised in Orleans and graduated from Nauset High School. She received a bachelor’s degree from Emmanuel College and a master’s degree from Bridgewater State University. Specializing in behavior therapy, special and preschool education, she taught first grade at Harwich Elementary School before moving over to Chatham Elementary School in September, where she led the preschool program.

 A memorial scholarship has been set up in the names of Mrs. Hubbard and her daughter, known as Maggie June, to help local families with the cost of preschool. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Shannon and Maggie June Hubbard Scholarship, in care of the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, Box 86, Orleans, MA 02653.
