Lower Cape Teams Vie For Playoff Positioning In MIAA Power Rankings
As the fall season winds down, the pressure is ramping up.
All eyes are on the MIAA Power Rankings, a mathematical rating system that combines teams’ margin of victory (capped at plus/minus three goals) with the average of their opponents’ rating. The top 32 teams in field hockey and volleyball and the top 33 in soccer qualify for postseason tournaments regardless of their records.
Nauset field hockey (5-5-1) was ranked No. 24 in the latest edition of the Division 3 field hockey power rankings released Oct. 4, while Monomoy (10-0-1) ranks second in Division 4 behind Uxbridge (9-1-0), which dealt the Sharks a 4-0 loss in last year’s state championship.
The top 16 football teams with at least three wins and seven games played qualify for the football state tournament. Nauset football (3-2) was ranked No. 23 in Friday’s Division 4 rankings, though that doesn’t include the team’s 28-14 victory over Nantucket on Friday. Monomoy (1-3) is ranked No. 27 in Division 7, while Cape Cod Tech (1-3) is No. 13 in Division 8.
In boys soccer, Nauset (8-0-2) was ranked No. 20 in Friday’s Division 3 rankings, Monomoy (6-5-1) was ranked No. 21 in Division 4, and Cape Tech (7-2-0) was No. 38 in Division 5.
On the girls’ side, Nauset (6-1-2) was ranked No. 14 in Friday’s rankings, Monomoy (6-4-1) was No. 17 in Division 4, and Cape Tech (1-5-2) was No. 42 in Division 5.
Nauset girls volleyball (6-6) was ranked No. 46 in Friday’s Division 3 power rankings, while Monomoy (3-8) was No. 46 in Division 4. Cape Tech (9-1) was No. 12 in the latest Division 5 rankings.
