BREWSTER – On Sunday, Cape Cod was the epicenter of Massachusetts’ high school golf scene.
The Bay State’s best teams and many of its top competitors converged on Brewster over the weekend to compete in the Cape Cod National Golf Club High School Invitational.
Monomoy senior Jackson Rocco and Nauset senior Jack Martin represented the Cape as individual participants, with Rocco finishing tied for fifth with a 5-over-par 76 and Martin tying for 21st with an 8-over 80.
“It was fun,” said Rocco, a Dennis resident. “The weather kind of killed it — it was raining, windy, pretty cold — but overall, it was a lot of fun.”
Both Rocco and Martin entered the single-day, 18-hole tournament with a familiarity of the course after working as caddies the past few summers. That knowledge of the course paid dividends for Rocco on No. 15, when he sent a wedge shot 119 yards to tap in for birdie.
“I stuck a really good wedge shot almost in the hole,” said Rocco. “I just needed to tap in for birdie, which was big. I really needed that.”
Concord-Carlisle senior Will Spring captured the individual title with an even par 72. Hingham senior Drew Golden (73) finished second, followed by St. John’s Prep senior Tripp Hollister (74).
Xaverian won the team title with 231 points, outlasting St. John’s Prep (236) and BC High (238).
Rocco said he was thrilled to be invited to play in the eighth edition of the tournament as a senior.
“A lot of these kids have played here multiple years, but this was my first year,” he said. “I was excited to get invited for my senior year. I didn’t really care about my score, I just wanted to have fun. I’m very happy with 4-over.”
