You learn a lot when you spend time chatting with a real estate broker who’s been in the business for decades. It’s an ever-changing occupation and can tell you much about the economy and the area you live in.

Thom Schoepfer is one of those realtors.

“I studied everything in the world about real estate, joined Coldwell Banker in Harwich in the 1970s,” he said. “Learned a lot. Was rookie of the year, one of the top two agents there and then I got recruited by Re/Max. But that was many years ago.” Today he’s with Keller Williams.

“I love it here. Keller Williams is very ‘realtor-centric.’ It's made for entrepreneurs and I’ve been an entrepreneur since a young age, having multiple jobs at ages 8 and 10,” he says with a laugh. “Did you know that Keller Williams is number one in the world? They're not only number one in agent count, they’re number one in sales count, too.” Schoepfer was at a different major real estate company for a long time after Re/Max, “but with the changes there, I began to think about retiring. And Keller Williams actually changed my mind.”

He's happy where he is now in his life. “Along with their global reach, Keller Williams is a very caring company, too. When my partner had a heart attack, I had just joined the company and they sent me grandma‘s chicken soup. Here I was alone, having some comfort food and thinking what a thoughtful thing that was to do,”

Schoepfer loves the world of real estate. “My first paid real estate job was managing historic properties, then overseeing rehab commercial and residential tenancy as well as landmarking. After that I did bank work management with a subsidiary of Recoll Management. My parents had homes in New York and Connecticut and we summered here in Chatham and Orleans.”

Schoepfer is quick to point out that if you are looking to buy a house on the Cape, he’s a good person to start with. “I am active, ready and willing and able. I make sure I give concierge service. I cover all the towns from Osterville to Provincetown on a routine basis and I’ve sold in almost every neighborhood. My niches have always been architectural properties, vintage historic, I call them special babies. There could be questions on structural issues, questions on use codes in historic districting, etc., with these kinds of properties. I’ve also been involved in condo conversions, restaurants, and more. I love historic properties and I tend to sell what I love. I am loss-mitigation certified, meaning I have sold over 100 bank-owned, short sales and estate sales, too.

“Seventy-five percent of my listings are through a personal referral, that’s either a realtor referral, a past client or neighbors of a home that I have sold. ‘You sold three or more houses on our street and you never called or bothered us,’ they say. ‘So we decided to list it with you when we decided to sell.’”

Thom Schoepfer told me he believes in real estate. “I don't believe in a lot of things, but I believe in real estate, it’s a solid investment.”
