Health Page: ‘Sunshine Kids’ Benefit Helps Children With Pediatric Cancer

Two years ago, Tony Guthrie's perspective on life changed when he heard a presentation on the work of the Sunshine Kids, a nonprofit organization that supports children with pediatric cancer and their families. As he listened to a young child recalling a lifesaving decision to amputate a leg, "it affected me profoundly," Guthrie recalled.

Guthrie, a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices/Robert Paul, was determined to get involved supporting the work of Sunshine Kids. The organization sponsors trips for kids to meet others facing the same challenges and helps them and their families during and after treatment.

"If you don't have your health, you don't have anything," he said.

Last year Guthrie, on behalf of sponsors Berkshire Hathaway HomeService/Robert Paul, organized the first of what has turned out to be an annual fundraiser for the group. Last year's event raised $80,000, and he was "overwhelmed but not surprised by the support of the community. That's what is so special about the Cape," he said. "When you are in need you turn to the community and they help without question!"

This year's gala event, called "Sunshine Soiree," is set for 6 p.m. June 2 at the Chatham Bars Inn Beach House Grill. Channel 5 personalities Maria Stephanos and Harvey Leonard will host and the Mark Greel band will provide musical entertainment.

"Our goal is $150,000 this year," Guthrie said.

Four children ranging in age from 14 to 18 who are in varying stages of sometimes grueling treatment will share their stories at the Soiree, he said.

Tickets are on sale now, and Guthrie is looking for sponsors to help underwrite the event. Sponsorship opportunities are available starting at $1,200 and going up to $25,000.

A former president of the Chatham Merchants Association as well as the Harwich Chamber of Commerce, Guthrie is actively involved supporting Monomoy Community Services and the Animal Rescue League. He volunteers and donates to the Family Pantry in addition to his work as a real estate agent.

Established in 1982 by a pediatric oncology nurse, Sunshine Kids is committed to providing positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients. They are especially focused on the therapeutic effects of bringing children together who have like illnesses, Guthrie noted. There are children on Cape Cod who are dealing with pediatric cancer every day, he added.

"What they have to deal with, what these kids are facing, it changes your perspective on life," he said.

"I am very blessed to have seven nieces and nephews as well as five great nieces and nephews who are all very healthy. When you have healthy kids in your life you don't consider the alternative. But when it's put in front of you, as it was for me, it just strikes you in a way that never touched me before," he said. “These kids just stole my heart."
