HARWICH – When the Monomoy football team needed a spark, junior Quinn Connors answered the call. And when the Sharks needed a big play to seal the deal, Connors delivered in the clutch.
Connors played a key role in Monomoy’s 28-8 non-league victory over Upper Cape Tech on Friday night as he caught a 50-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring before sealing the win late in the fourth quarter with an interception he returned 51 yards for a touchdown.
“I’m not going to lie, I was the first person to yell, ‘Get down!’ when he got that pick,” Monomoy coach Rob Sliney said in regards to the aftermath of the interception. “It was scaring me seeing him run like that, but he did a great job. He’s an absolute playmaker and is a guy that we want to get the ball in his hands. Absolute athlete.”
Connors, a Harwich resident, gave Monomoy (4-3) a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when his classmate and the team’s quarterback Jake Vagenas found him in stride on a post route through the middle of the field.
His interception came as Upper Cape tried its hardest to crawl back into the game. It served as the decisive play that helped ensure Monomoy would snap its two-game losing skid with a homecoming win.
“It felt great,” Connors said of the interception. “I just felt the wind flowing in my face and kept sprinting. I knew that it would seal it. It was very sweet to get into the end zone.”
The win helps keep Monomoy’s state tournament hopes alive.
“We needed this win to push ourselves forward,” Connors said postgame.
