Maris Childs

On September 3, 2022 Maris Childs passed away peacefully at her home in North Chatham. Loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and poet — her poems have appeared in the Chatham EPL “Tidings” and the Chatham COA “Flash,” as well as her self-published book, “Frequent Flyer and Other Poems.”
To an English father and a Scottish mother, Maris was born in Edinburgh in 1927. She emigrated to the United States in 1959 and married Joseph T. Childs, an attorney, originally from Dorchester. Later in life she became a U.S. citizen.
Maris is survived by her four children — Georgia, Nicholas, Stephanie, and Rebecca, and her nine grandchildren — Andrew, Sophie, Gerald, Reilly, Mary, Helen, Harrison, Isobel, and Grace.
Maris asks no tears be shed for her as she had a good life. Her final request is that the following poem be printed:
When I look back upon my life I see how lucky I have been. The people I have known and loved; The sights and places I have seen.
I made mistakes along the way; Regret a few that I recall; But when I could not sleep at night, I’d view the past with quiet delight And revel in it all.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Holy Redeemer in Chatham on September 17, 2022 at 10am.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Habitat for Humanity International - online at or by mail to: 322 West Lamar Street, Americus, GA 31709-3543
