NORTH EASTHAM – It’s hard enough to perform well under the radar. It’s even harder to perform well with a target on your back.

Although Nauset boys soccer striker Nate Watring has commanded attention from every team the Warriors have played in recent years, he’s still managed to establish himself as one of the best players in the state.

“He’s got no weakness,” Nauset junior midfielder Charlie Cushing said of Watring, Nauset’s returning senior captain. “I’ve never played with a guy like him before. Having him at striker makes the whole team better because he gets so much attention but he still produces.”

Ask Watring what the key is to producing while receiving so much attention from opponents and he’ll boil it down to simple terms.

“You just got to be better than them, I guess,” said Watring, a Yarmouth resident. “You’ve got to work harder than them. I’ve got all I need from my team. They’ll help me and support me when I need it.”

Watring said it still “hasn’t really hit” that this will be his final season for Nauset, though he’s already hopeful to take his game to the next level.

“Play better than last year,” he answered when asked about his goals and expectations for this fall.
