BREWSTER — Baseball fans with New England ties are no strangers to playoff greatness. We’ve seen Curt Schilling battle through a bloody sock, watched Manny Ramirez and Mike Lowell claim World Series MVP awards and David Ortiz do, well, everything during his illustrious career with the Red Sox.

Brewster Whitecaps infielder Carson Demartini has cemented himself in the Cape League history books with one of the most productive postseasons you’ll ever see on this side of the bridge.

The leadoff batter from Virginia Tech is hitting .533 with eight hits – including four home runs – and eight RBIs through four postseason games and is the biggest reason the defending champion Whitecaps advanced back to the CCBL championship, where they’ll meet Bourne in a rematch of last year’s final.

“The ball must look like a basketball coming in to him right now,” Whitecaps manager Jamie Shevchik said of Demartini’s recent success. “I mean, talk about getting hot at the right time. He carried us for a big part of [the playoffs].”

Demartini said he hasn’t tried to change much during his recent run of success. Although he struggled a bit at the start of the summer, he was named to the East Division All-Star team and then finished the season strong.

“Honestly, just sticking to my approach and what I’ve been doing all summer,” the Virginia Beach native answered when asked about the key to his postseason dominance.

“I for sure had my struggles this summer, but just being able to stay on the process and not so much the results really helped me in the long haul. I know that my swing is good; I know it’s good to go and that’s what it’s all about.”

Demartini added that “it’s awesome” to make an impact for the Whitecaps and help them compete for another Cape League title.

“We’ve all been working our butts off all summer,” he said. “It’s great to see everyone contribute.”
