The Latham Open charity singles tournament will return for its fourth edition on Aug. 12 to Aug. 14 at Harwich’s community tennis courts at Brooks Park. The United States Tennis Association-sanctioned tournament serves as a fundraiser to benefit Latham School in Brewster.

Rufus McCleery, a rising senior at Nauset and the captain for the school’s boys tennis team, began the tournament with a Sturgis Charter High School student, Oliver Prantis, in 2019.

McCleery and his father, Matt, a member of Latham’s board of directors and parent to Latham student Homer, Rufus’s younger brother, will work together to organize the event.

“It’s an honor to organize this tournament,” said Matt McCleery. “In addition to raising money, the event also helps build community awareness of Latham, which is the only school in the United States that specializes in a rare and complex genetic disorder called Prader-Willi Syndrome. Latham students and staff are truly inspirational.”

Rufus said it’s his favorite tournament to take part in.

“Tennis tournaments are always fun, but this one is my favorite because it supports Latham School in Brewster, which is an amazing place,” he said.
