HARWICH – Joe Vetrano made sure the Harwich Mariners started their final regular-season push with a blast. Literally.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound first baseman from Boston College launched a grand slam off Brewster starter Najer Victor (Central Florida) in the second inning of Monday’s game to help Harwich earn a convincing 10-4 victory over East Division rival Brewster at Whitehouse Field.
“He had me out in front of my first at-bat so going into my second at-bat I was just trying to stay back and look for a good pitch that I can put a good swing on,” said Vetrano, a Shrub Oak, N.Y. native. “Luckily he threw something over the middle of the plate that I put a good swing on. Felt great to put a good swing on a ball and get us some run support.”
It was Vetrano’s fourth homer of the summer and brought his RBI total to 24. The East Division All-Star Game selection is hitting .240 through 33 games played for the Mariners.
