HARWICH – The Brewster Whitecaps were on the verge of being held hitless. Then Whitecaps shortstop Alex Freeland did what he does best: hit the ball into a gap.
The Harwich Mariners only needed four more outs to throw a combined no-hitter against Brewster on Monday at Whitehouse Field when Freeland collected the Whitecaps’ first hit of the game with a single to rightfield with two outs in the top of the eighth.
Hitting has been a staple of Freeland’s summer – the Cape Coral, Fla. native and University of Central Florida product boasts a .276 batting average and a team-best five home runs in addition to recording 11 RBIs through 17 games.
Monday was the most recent example of Freeland coming through – he scored Brewster’s only run during the 1-1 tie – but he’s also collected hits in five of his past seven games and reached base safely in all but one of those games.
