Austin Walker possesses the skills and knowledge needed to take over a game. The senior from Harwich showed he’s capable of doing just that Thursday afternoon when he and the rest of the Cape Cod Tech boys lacrosse team traveled to Bourne for a Mayflower Athletic Conference matchup against rival Upper Cape Tech.
Although Upper Cape ultimately earned a 10-5 victory, Walker was among the players who stood out after he scored a hat trick for Cape Tech, which fell to 2-2 on the young season.
At times, Walker looked like the best player on the field, such as halfway through the first quarter when he won a faceoff at midfield and then took off toward Upper Cape’s net. Walker weaved through a sea of defenders en route to the goal before bouncing a shot into the back of the net to give Tech a 2-1 lead.
“It all comes with spacing the floor,” Walker said of his ability to cut around the field. “My teammates do a great job of it. Tom [Svenningson] knows how to space the floor and Aidan Shafer — it’s really a matter of those guys reading and reacting and seeing me coming down hot and bringing their defenders away from me. I do the same for Tom and Aidan.”
Despite the fact Walker is one of only two seniors on Cape Tech’s young roster, the midfielder said he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I’ve got my squad,” Walker said passionately after the team’s loss to Upper Cape. “They’ve been great.”
