There was a palpable excitement radiating through the Monomoy boys tennis team Monday afternoon when the Sharks met at Monomoy Regional Middle School for their first practice of the spring.

Senior co-captain Joe Malone said there is plenty to be excited about this year’s team, most notably the amount of leadership that will come from the eight seniors that make up half of the squad’s 16-person roster.

“It honestly feels good, because I play a lot of sports and I’ve had teams that I didn’t get a lot of leadership,” said Malone, a Dennis resident who also played football and basketball at Monomoy. “It feels good to see how many of the seniors here really do care about the underclassmen.”

Another wrinkle the Sharks are enjoying this spring? They could see each other’s unmasked faces Monday, unlike last spring, when mask mandates were still being enforced at the start of the season.

“It feels good to be out here without mask regulations,” Malone said.

While the senior co-captain embraced his leadership role during Monday’s first practice, Malone added that he’s also determined to take on a new role in the team’s lineup when Monomoy opens its season against St. John Paul II at 4 p.m. March 31 at Monomoy Regional Middle School.

After competing as a doubles player last spring, Malone said he’s hopeful to perhaps make a switch to playing singles this season.

“That change would be interesting,” he said. “I’m curious to see how it goes — I’m prepared for everything this year.”
