ARWICH – It was the type of performance the Monomoy girls basketball team had grown to expect out of Melissa Velasquez. Still, it couldn’t have come at a better time for the Sharks.

The junior guard from Harwich scored a career high 23 points to guide 26th-seeded Monomoy to a 61-22 victory over No. 39 Blue Hills in the opening round of the Division 4 state tournament March 1 in Harwich.

“It’s exciting to start out on a good note,” said Velasquez, who scored 10 points in the first quarter and finished with five 3-pointers in all.

Monomoy coach Brian Tomasini said the performance was “what we’ve expected from Melissa all year,” noting that the junior ground her way throughout the winter, which saw her not only be a key figure at the offensive end but on defense, too.

“Lucy Mawn usually takes the best player defensively and then Melissa takes the other best player,” Tomasini said. “So, Melissa works so hard defensively and then she’s our focal point on offense. Tonight, it really showed — especially from outside. She stuck with it and shot with confidence.”

Velasquez scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Sharks on Friday, though the team ultimately suffered a season-ending 52-41 loss at No. 7 Northbridge in the second round of the tournament.
