NORWELL—The Monomoy field hockey team’s magical run through the Division 4 state tournament ended Tuesday night at Norwell High School when the top-seeded Sharks suffered a 3-2 shootout loss to No. 4 Ipswich in the state semifinal.

The back-and-forth contest was filled with plenty of drama — as Monomoy overcame a 2-0 deficit to force overtime, only for the teams to need two 10-minute overtime periods and a shootout to determine the winner.

When the dust finally settled, it was Ipswich that earned a spot in the state final after its junior Chloe Pszenny bested Monomoy senior goaltender Caroline Upson to score in the final round of the shootout.

“I’m so proud of this team,” Monomoy’s first-year coach Kathryn Andreoli said. “I don’t care what the score was, these girls played with their whole hearts. That’s all that I can ask for as a coach, that they came out and tried their hardest and they wanted it so bad. I’ve never seen a game like that — ever — to have it go to the end like that was a culmination of our hard work all season.”

Ipswich (18-1-1) advances to the Division 4 state final where it’ll meet the winner of a semifinal between Manchester Essex and Uxbridge on Saturday (time/location TBA). Monomoy finished its season with a 15-4-2 record.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead into halftime following first-half goals by Estelle Gromko and Linde Ruitenberg. The Sharks didn’t waver, however, as they looked like a different team when they returned for the third quarter.

Less than three minutes into the second half, eighth-grader Samantha Clarke tipped a shot by senior Caroline DiGiovanni to cut Monomoy’s deficit to 2-1 with 12:52 left in the third quarter. Another underclassman, freshman Emily Layton, netted the equalizer for the Sharks when she scored on a corner with no time remaining in the fourth quarter.

DiGiovanni and senior Isabella McMahon were credited with Monomoy’s goals during the shootout. Ruitenberg and Ella Vogler found the back of the net for Ipswich during the shootout before Pszenny sealed the deal.

A full recap on Monomoy’s season will be included in the sports section of next week’s edition.
