Margaret E. “Peggy” Lewis

Margaret E. “Peggy” Lewis, of West Chatham and formerly of Clearwater, Fla., died peacefully of natural causes on April 21, 2021 at the age of 96.
Peggy was born in New York City, daughter of the late Rosemary C. and George H. Ebbert.  She and her five younger brothers were raised in Wilmette, Ill.  After graduating from New Trier High School in Evanston, Ill., Peggy attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.
In the midst of World War II, Peggy returned to Chicago and was hired by the newly formed Trans World Airlines (TWA) as an “Air Hostess.”  It was in the skies, high above the United States that Peggy met and fell in love with her future husband, TWA Captain Horace W. “Lew” Lewis.
In the mid 1940s, airline hostesses were required to retire within three months of becoming married.  This suited Peggy and Lew as creating a family was of the utmost importance.  Over the next 12 years, five children were born.  Peggy embraced her role as a loving wife, devoted mother and doting grandmother and great grandmother.  As the matriarch of the family, she created a welcoming home filled with unconditional love.
Following years of child raising, Peggy and Lew delighted in spending the next 40 years traveling between winter residences in Glenwood Springs, Colo., shushing the slopes of Sunlight and Buttermilk mountains, and Clearwater, Fla., boating on the “Tulu” and golfing at the Clearwater Country Club.  However, it was their 60 plus years as summer and, ultimately, permanent residents of the Cape Cod seaside town of Chatham that brought them the most joy.  Many, many happy years were spent with family and friends swimming at Hardings Beach, sailing on Nantucket Sound as members of the Stage Harbor Yacht Club, and enjoying the beach and tennis at the Chatham Beach and Tennis Club.
Peggy is survived by her husband of 73 years, Horace W. Lewis of West Chatham, daughter Linda Doane (Tommy Doane) of Chatham, daughter Janet Lewis of Chatham, son Thomas Lewis (Ailene Robinson) of Boston and their children Tyler Lewis (Sarah) and Claire Lewis, as well as Tyler’s children Avery and James Lewis, daughter Patricia Lewis (Peter Sullivan) of Sandwich and her children Marguerite Michael (Adam Michael), Hunter and Griffin Mello and Marguerite’s children Gemma and Marley Michael, and son Robert Lewis (Kathryn) of Tampa, Florida and their children Robert, George and Lawson Lewis.
Peggy will be remembered by family and friends for her kindness, warmth and courage.  Many thanks are extended to caregivers Andrea Layne and Liberty Benson of Visiting Angels of Cape Cod, Ellen Scott Garvey, Sally Tuck, and Jen Moulton, with special thanks to BroadReach Hospice nurse, Lucy Elmer, and to Peggy’s personal physicians and nurses.  The family requests that gifts honoring Peggy’s life be made to Emily’s List, Stage Harbor Sailing School Inc. of Chatham, MA, BroadReach Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
