CHATHAM – Whales will return to Kate Gould Park for this summer's Chatham Merchants Association and the Chatham Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Art in the Park display. Last year's popular Oars in the Stores scavenger hunt will also return.
Whale cut-outs from Stello Construction will be ready for distribution on March 10. Oars for the Oars in the Stores scavenger hunt will be ready for delivery on March 10 as well. There are 50 whales and 36 oars available. Both will be available on a first come, first served basis.
Sponsors find local artists or decorate the whales and oars themselves. An online auction is open throughout the summer, ending at the close of the exhibit, with half the proceeds going to the artists and half to the merchants association to help support its events and other activities. Last year's whales earned $82,480, which was the highest total since the Art in the Park exhibit began (as Sharks in the Park).
Whales will be offered to members of the Chatham Chamber of Commerce at no cost. A limited number are available to non-member businesses for a $150 sponsorship fee. Oars are only available to members of the Merchants Association; there is no charge to sponsor an oar.
